Scranton Hanger Facility Will Collect Used Prosthetic Limbs
In honor of its upcoming open house, a local prosthetic clinic is holding a used limb drive to benefit less fortunate amputees around the world.
Hanger Prosthetic and Orthotic at 1339 N. Main Ave., Scranton, PA 18508 will accept donated, used prosthetic through Oct. 14. These limbs will be sent to the Limbs for
Life Foundation, a non-profit organization that buys new prosthetic limbs for amputees in the United States and distributes used limbs to amputees in developing countries.
These limbs will go to clinics in countries like the Dominican Republic and Turkey so less fortunate amputees can get a second lease on life. The limb drive culminates with Hanger’s open house on Oct. 14 from 3 to 8 p.m.
“We are honored to be working with the Hanger clinic in Scranton to help amputees in need,” said Craig Gavras, Limbs for Life’s executive director. “These limbs will allow a lot of people to walk who otherwise would be confined to a wheelchair.”
The open house will close the limb drive and also allow amputees and their families to see what Hanger has to offer and what new technology is available in the world of prosthetics. Displays and information will be available for people to view.
Hanger has been collecting used limbs for Limbs for Life for three months now and has already collected 50 used limbs for the foundation. They are hoping the end of the limb drive and the open house will bring in even more.
